Five and a Half Acting Tips Not Taught in Drama Class

Check out Actingbiz.com’s Ruth Kulerman’s Five and a Half Acting Tips Not Taught in Drama Class
1. The Ubiquitous Omnipotnet Comma. (Dethrone Immediately.) Contrary to actors’ beliefs, commas did not descend from Mount Sinai, written on stone tablets. Commas are the domain of a reader, not a speaker. Commas replace the missing human voice whose intonation helps decode written language and make it comprehensible — a fancy way of saying, ignore commas when you act.
They belong on a page, not in a spoken line. Replace commas, not with pauses, but with vocal variety–or ignore the squiggly critters completely. Do not pause when commas cross your path. Slide right across them. We don’t talk in commas, so don’t act in commas either.
My slogan as the comma cop is DOWN WITH PAUSES CAUSED BY COMMAS!
1.5 The Pause the Exhausts. (Verbal exercise: stretch or leap.) There used to be a slogan for one of the soft drinks: “The pause that refreshes.” And yet in acting I have heard eighteen billion pauses, mistakenly believed to be dramatic or pregnant or sensitive or something. (“We find the defendant pause pause pause pause not guilty.”) London taught me: “You have to earn a pause.” Otherwise they are More >

Stella McCartney to design British Olympic kit
Jul 19th
As reported by the London Associated Press, Fashion designer Stella McCartney will oversee the design of the athletes’ clothing for the British team at the 2012 London Olympics, it was announced on Wednesday.
The daughter of the Beatles singer Paul McCartney has been appointed creative director for Team GB at the Olympic and Paralympic Games and will help shape the clothing to be made by Adidas.
The British Olympic Association said it was the first time in the history of the summer Games that a designer will work with a sports brand to design the team’s kit.
McCartney, who has already designed a line of clothing for Adidas, said: “As a British fashion designer it is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be creative director of Team GB as the host nation of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
Olympic and world champion cyclist Victoria Pendleton said she was excited about the tie-up.
“I’m a massive fan of Stella McCartney and with London hosting the Olympic Games it is really important as the host nation to set the standards.
“To have a British designer inputting into the British kit is going to be very special.”
Selena Gomez Debuts New Line ‘Dream Out Loud’ for Kmart
Jul 13th
As reported by Stylelist.com, Selena Gomez’s new collection for Kmart, Dream Out Loud, has a definite American style, but her back-to-school photo shoot was strictly an international affair.
The promotional shoot were taken back in May on a hillside farm outside Budapest, where Gomez was filming “Ramona and Beezus,” which is set to be released July 23, and the models were flown in from London.
And just like a typical teenager, Gomez — who turns 18 later this month — arrived on set at 7am (accompanied by mom), wearing a track suit, her hair all over the place, carrying a bag of McDonald’s, and a huge Diet Coke, Kmart’s chief marketing officer Mark Snyder told StyleList exclusively.
Once settled, Gomez was all business. “Selena plugged her personal iPod into the speaker system and chose the music for every shot,” Snyder said.
“She started with Taylor Swift, and ended the day with Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.’”
He continued: “Selena was very engaged with the shots themselves and stepped into the tent where we were viewing actual shots on-screen with the photographer and myself to agree on what shots looked best.”

Jul 13th
According to Instyle.com, Marcjacobs.com has all the bells and whistles as one would expect from a leading fashion designer’s site—including livestream videos, gorgeous photos, news, and gossip—but it’s been missing one obvious thing: Online shopping! Like many high-end retailers, Marc Jacobs has been slow to the e-commerce trend, but he has finally announced plans to sell clothes on his site, starting in September. Robert Duffy, the President and Vice Chairman of Marc Jacobs, even hinted that there will be exclusive duds on the relaunched site. “I want to give people a reason to go there,” he told The New York Times. So, What Exactly Is Haute Couture?
Jul 8th
Fall/Winter, Spring/Summer, Resort — these are all completely understandable categories for fashion shows. In other words, you know what you’re getting: some leather and fur at the F/W shows, the perfect maxi dress at the S/S shows, and a chic tunic at Resort.
This week, Styleite.com’s Ruthie Friedlander highlights all the happenings from from Paris Couture Week. “Karl Lagerfeld walked a model in a stuffed lion mask down the runway, Dita Von Teese strutted Gaultier’s in a dominatrix outfit to which only she could do justice, and the models that walked the Dior runway brought new meaning to botanics. It’s easy to look at these elaborate runway shows and ogle over their extraordinariness. But when you take away Karl’s eight-ton lion, what exactly are we looking at? What is Haute Couture? And why does it have its own week?
Our trusty reference book, The Fashion Book defines haute couture:
“An industry of established couturiers, or dressmakers, protected by the law and governed by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne with rigid regulations and emphasis on craftsmanship. Haute Couture specifically refers to the manufacture of made-to-measure garments, an industry that employs a small group of highly skilled craftspeople. In terms of revenue, haute couture More >
