First-Ever Plus-Size Show Hits N.Y.C. Fashion Week!
Sep 16th
People Magazine’s Thailan Pham reports: ‘It wasn’t all stick-thin models ruling the runways during New York Fashion Week, as curvy stars like Nikki Blonsky, Gabourey Sidibe and model Emme sat front row yesterday to take in the first-ever plus-size show during fashion’s most high-drama week. “This is a milestone in the plus-size community. We’ve never had anything like this,” Blonsky said at the OneStopPlus.com presentation on Wednesday. “To be in New York City Fashion Week, which I think is the biggest fashion week in the world, to be here is just a huge thing for us.” And plus-size model Emme, couldn’t have agreed more: “You have to join forces to make a statement and to be part of a revolution. It’s monumental in its reach,” Emme told PEOPLE, adding, “I think the big statement that’s going to be made with this fashion show is not only going to be made within the full-figured community but I think it’s going to talk to the bottom line of design houses, designers, and business people involved in fashion,” she said. “Why don’t we make clothes above a size 12? Why don’t we load heavier in sizes 14, 16, and 18 in stores? Just change More >
Demi Lovato’s ‘Sonny’ Gets A Clothing Line At Target
Jul 22nd
According to Sandrine Milet of MTV.com, Well, now kids all over the country will be able to dress just like Sonny when the “D Signed” fashion line hits Target August 1st, just a few weeks before school starts.
The line, which is inspired by Demi’s character, will include t-shirts, shorts, skirts, jewelry and bags for girls ages 8 to 12. According to Reuters, what’s special about the line is that “rather than create traditional merchandise with the characters’ likeness, fashion items from D-Signed are those that would be found in Sonny’s own closet — if she were a real person.” Sounds like fun!
But, in real life, the actress has great fashion sense, too, and she loves to take risks in terms of color. In a video posted on Disney Living’s YouTube site, Demi said, “I like mixing and matching things … I really like mixing colors. They always say, ‘Don’t wear brown and black together,’ but I totally do that.”
So will Demi come out with her own fashion any time soon? After all, it is a longtime trend for Disney stars to make their way into the fashion world. Recently Selena Gomez announced her line “Dream Out Loud” would be launching this More >
Selena Gomez Debuts New Line ‘Dream Out Loud’ for Kmart
Jul 13th
As reported by Stylelist.com, Selena Gomez’s new collection for Kmart, Dream Out Loud, has a definite American style, but her back-to-school photo shoot was strictly an international affair.
The promotional shoot were taken back in May on a hillside farm outside Budapest, where Gomez was filming “Ramona and Beezus,” which is set to be released July 23, and the models were flown in from London.
And just like a typical teenager, Gomez — who turns 18 later this month — arrived on set at 7am (accompanied by mom), wearing a track suit, her hair all over the place, carrying a bag of McDonald’s, and a huge Diet Coke, Kmart’s chief marketing officer Mark Snyder told StyleList exclusively.
Once settled, Gomez was all business. “Selena plugged her personal iPod into the speaker system and chose the music for every shot,” Snyder said.
“She started with Taylor Swift, and ended the day with Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.’”
He continued: “Selena was very engaged with the shots themselves and stepped into the tent where we were viewing actual shots on-screen with the photographer and myself to agree on what shots looked best.”
So, What Exactly Is Haute Couture?
Jul 8th
Fall/Winter, Spring/Summer, Resort — these are all completely understandable categories for fashion shows. In other words, you know what you’re getting: some leather and fur at the F/W shows, the perfect maxi dress at the S/S shows, and a chic tunic at Resort.
This week, Styleite.com’s Ruthie Friedlander highlights all the happenings from from Paris Couture Week. “Karl Lagerfeld walked a model in a stuffed lion mask down the runway, Dita Von Teese strutted Gaultier’s in a dominatrix outfit to which only she could do justice, and the models that walked the Dior runway brought new meaning to botanics. It’s easy to look at these elaborate runway shows and ogle over their extraordinariness. But when you take away Karl’s eight-ton lion, what exactly are we looking at? What is Haute Couture? And why does it have its own week?
Our trusty reference book, The Fashion Book defines haute couture:
“An industry of established couturiers, or dressmakers, protected by the law and governed by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne with rigid regulations and emphasis on craftsmanship. Haute Couture specifically refers to the manufacture of made-to-measure garments, an industry that employs a small group of highly skilled craftspeople. In terms of revenue, haute couture More >

Lanvin Knocks them Dead on the Runways of Paris
Jun 28th
According to FWD, ‘Judging from the applause at the end of Lanvin’s latest menswear runway show, the best received collection in Europe these past 10 days in either Milan or Paris was that of this storied French brand.
A cunning distillation of several ideas – the revival of the dandy, bohemian tailoring and sensitive chic – the collection won a standing ovation at its finale on the morning of Sunday, June 27, in Paris.
Staged in the Mineralogy Gallery of Paris’ elegant Botanical Gardens – the cast got dressed before man-sized crystals in the backstage – the collection was a great statement of libertine French gentleman’s style. They were clothes that most every guy in the audience wanted to wear, and which women would love to see their husbands or boyfriends buy.
“We wanted to get away from the whole macho thing, from the stigma of being sensitive,” added the designer, as models knocked back champagne on the sun-filled gallery steps.’
Forever 21 Times Square Braces for Crowds
Jun 25th
New Yorkers who find themselves in need of a fresh party dress after midnight on a Tuesday have a new savior in Forever 21. The fast-fashion retailer’s new Times Square megastore is open every night (or is it morning?) until 2 a.m. By that time, most of the tourists should be in bed and residents of the City That Never Sleeps can have their chance to roam the four-floor 90,000 sq ft mansion of dresses and earrings.
The new Times Square store will get between 200 and 600 boxes of new merchandise every night. Handling those shipments will be an army of 600 employees, an advantage Mayor Mike Bloomberg himself celebrated Thursday.
As reported in today’s Journal, the Times Square opening is the latest step of the privately held company’s strategy to create a fast-fashion department store. One of the biggest challenges facing the company: figuring out what to fill it with. Forever 21 showed off its range with a fashion show Thursday evening. Dozens of models were divided into five distinct aesthetics: rocker glam (black cigarette pants, shredded tops); boho garden party (silk tanks, lace tights); nerd chic (houndstooth skirts, sequined oxfords; hippie love (beaded smocks, forehead headbands) and punk grunge More >
